half from now, the long-awaited barry bonds trial will start in san francisco. allie rasmus is live with the first thing that's going to happen this morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. the first thing on the agenda is jury duty. and it will happen in at this federal building behind hee. you -- building behind me. you can see the metal gates, they are presumably out here for control crowd -- for crowd control. barry bonds is expected to in court today to watch the proceedings, although he's not expected to testify in this case. this trial is not about whether bonds took steroids. it's about whether he lied about taking steroids. back in 2003, he testified before a federal grand jury that he did not knowingly take steroids and that was part of the federal investigation into

steroids use in major league baseball. he was indicted on four counts. bonds's attorneys say they are confident the popular baseball star will be acquitted. >> we felt this -- you know from the first day we all met that the government's evidence has proven nothing and we still think that. >> reporter: now, the trial is expected to take two to four weeks. federal prosecutors are gonna call 50 witnesses to testify. one witness who said he will not testify is greg anderson. he's bonds's former trainer. anderson has spent time in jail for not cooperating. the first thing we have to get true this morning is jury -- through this morning is jury

selection and that's expected to start in about an hour from now. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, allie. new this morning, turkey has secured the release of four new york times "journalists -- of four" new york times "journals. libya had originally said they were going to release the four last friday. the journalists were captured in the eastern part of that country last week. "the new york times" says the four entered the country without visas. the trial begins today for the two men charged in the murder of an oakland journalist. yusef bey iv is accused of firing the gunman would killed chauncey bailey. he was writing an article exposing financial troubles at the now defunct your black muslim bakery.

mackey is expected of -- is charged as well. overnight two san francisco police officers were taken to the hospital after they were hurt during a foot chase. it happened at baldwin. two police officers were chasing a stolen car when the three people inside that car jumped out and started running. officers ran after them but they were somehow injured in that pursue -- pursuit. another injured police officer, this time near brentwood. it happened about 5:00 yesterday afternoon on marsh creek road. witnesses say the officer flipped his patrol car after climbing up a muddy embankment. that patrol car ended up blocking a lane in the road. no one else was hurt. santacruz still working to rebuild the harbor that was damaged in last week's tsunami surge. jade hernandez is live at the harbor right now with when the

parts of the harbor could reopen. >> reporter: good morning. portions of this harbor were reopened, dave, over the weekend but weather shut it down. the port director decided yesterday that this harbor would remain closed at least through tomorrow. in the meantime, santa cruz county wants to prep residents here ii future tsunami surges. what you are looking at this morning, cell phone video. it's been more than a week since that day. as i mentioned, part of the santa cruz county harbor reopened to boat traffic but stormy weather shut it down. more than a dozen boat owners lost their boats. hundreds more damaged, creating more than $26 million in damage. so far, eight privately owned boats have been recovered every day the harbor is closed. it loses an estimated $206,000

in the santa cruz economy. for now, the coast guard is overseeing the debris and removal. while locals worry about the salmon season on the 2nd and authorities find ways to prepare for another disaster like this one, which brings us back to another meeting tonight. the tsunami county council will discuss the surge. the meeting will be held by a geo physicist in -- geophysicist. jade hernandez, back to you. >> thank you, jade. we have new video of a tree down in san francisco. this is the scene in front of a ymca on funtston avenue. the tree did not cause any problems when it fell. more than 4,000 pg&e customers are still in the dark after storm-related outages.

pg&e told us earlier this morning, most of the outages are in the north bay with 3700 customers affected. in the east bay it's less than 700 customers. the number is smaller in the south bay and on the -- on the peninsula. we checked in with the airports today and they say travel was -- weather messed things up. heavy winds in the los angeles area led to several cancellations and delays. bob hope's airport in burbank was hit the hardest. at least nine flights cancelled between the airports. we checked-to--- faa. weather in the new york city area is pretty bad. you can always find the latest traffic conditions by going to our channel 2 website,

ktvu.com. tori, just click on the weather tab. >> that's what you do. >> let's check in with sal. already some problems out there this morning. sal? >> that's right. we're still following the bay bridge closely -- we always do. today there was a crash. it is improving but still we have a busy morning at the bay bridge because of those earlier issues it's backed up all the way out to the maze and that means a 20-minute delay early. also this morning we're looking at the ma commute -- at the commute in marin county. now, rosemary says showers will be moving through so you may see some windshield wipers -- some oakland -- i'm sorry. you may see some wet weather as you drive through. let's take a look at northbound 101 as you drive up to the san jose area. that traffic is moving along okay. 17 itself coming into the valley looks good. at 7:09, hee's rosemary.

>> we're starting to sound like broken records here. scattered showers in the forecast. we are seeing a few breaks in the clouds. that will be the case again for the afternoon. that means the risk of thunderstorms. if we head to thunderstorm here. you can see a few light showers falling over the area -- over the area. we're seeing a little bit over the peninsula, some falling south of us primarily over monterey. but more to come. really not tapering off until the evening hours. we're dealing with mostly gray skies. you can see very widespread. our afternoon will be similar to yesterday. start to get a little bit of sunshine, next things you know it's raining. 46 expected in areas right around palo alto, 46 in s an jose, these temperatures cooler than yesterday by 5 almost 10 degrees. concord, 42, 48 in oakland. and san francisco right now checking in right about 48 degrees as well. if we head north where we're seeing some of our coolest locations, we're looking at 40 degrees in napa. 37degrees right now in areas

welcome back on this monday morning, where you can see the sutro tower in the background there. after a weekend of punishing air attacks, pentagon officials stay the united nations coalition has succeeded in scattering and isolating forces loyal to libyan leader moammar gadhafi. incredible pictures. in the meantime, state tv in tripoli says gadhafi supporters now gathering around airports. they are acting as human shields against these air strikes. britain says it aborted a bombing mission last night. they were trying to avoid killing civilians. we're also hearing word that a crew missile did destroy gadhafi 'compound and carried symbolism as well as the

military effect. the obama administration is getting a barrage of questions and alison burns has more on the criticism coming from the democrats and republicans. >> reporter: so far the u.s. is taking the lead role on launching those attacks. this is video from moammar gadhafi's compound, from what appears to be crews missile strikes. top obama administration officials are going to great emphasis to -- great efforts to say the coalition is minimal. >> we'll have a minimal role. >> reporter: but some democrats and republicans are expressing concern that the mission in libya is not defined and there's no end plan. senator john kerry says the

goal is not to remove moammar gadhafi from power. >> i would not call it going to war. this is a very limited operation that is geared to save lives. >> reporter: now, oakland congresswoman barbara lee joined a call with other liberal house democrats over the weekend, questioning the constitutionality of the operation. they say congress should have been involved. reporting live from washington, d.c., alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alison. 7:17. president obama, meanwhile, continues his five-day tour of latin america with a stop in chile. the president is expected to arrive in the country later this afternoon becoming only the fifth u.s. president to visit that south america nation. today's stop comes after the president spent the day in brazil. yesterday he was in rio rio de janeiro saying freedom and democracy are human rights. in the last 30 minutes

we've learned that smoke is now rising from reactor number 2 at the fukushima dai-ichy in japan. earlier this 0 morning -- early this morning, smoke started to react from number p -- from number 3. the smoke is a sign that overheaters are reacting. officials spent all weekend trying to keep the reactors cool by spraying sea water on them. and they are urging not to overreact to the radiation turning up in vegetables and some water supplies. we have video of an 80-year- old woman and her 16-year-old grand son being rescued -- grandson being rescued. both were conscious but weak. they survived on the food in their refrigerator. is officials estimate the death toll will now exceed 18,000. it could take five years for

japan to recover. 7:18. today, the california senate holds a hearing about the lessons california can learn from california's quake and tsunami. this is part of tsunami and awareness and preparedness week. the hearing will focus on the safety of the nuclear power plants and natural gas pipelines. now, representatives from the san onofre and diablo plants will be there testifying along with nuclear safety experts and the response to the tsunami along the coastline will also be debated. the man who said he debated the loma prieta earthquake is now warning people in the u.s. to -- western u.s. to expect an earthquake by the end of the back. he says the full moon and the high side is a telltale sign.

lawmakers have cut $14 billion from the state budget. governor brown still faces the challenge of getting a hand full of americans to put $11 billion worth of tax extensions on a june ballot. a bay area man says he's ready to lead california republicans to victory after a tough yore at the bal rot -- year at the ballot box. yesterday, tom del beccaro takes control of the party months after it lost all elections in the statewide election and the ongoing debate about a june election. he says he's opposed to the election and wants other cuts made instead. >> there's been studies showing 25% our programs are giving

pg&e is still working to create an opt-out plan for their controversial smart meter program. the california public utilities commission set a thursday deadline after a number of bay area companies approved moratoriums. some customers are concerned

about a health risk or leading to higher electricity bills. pg&e insists the devices are safe and will continue the program. transportation officials say americans are getting bigger. it's creating safety and spacers on bus. federal transit authority is considering raising the weight from 150 to 175 pounds. officials say the changes acknowledge the standing girth of the passenger -- of the average passenger. if approved, fewer passengers would be allowed on buses. the move comes as rising gas prices have more americans taking public transportations. speaking of gasoline prices keep going up, as the tensions in libya drive up crude oil. right now the national average of gas $3.76. that's 76 cents higher at this time last year. bay area prices, higher. the average, $4.02. in oakland it's about a nickel

welcome back. in about an hour, at 8:30, the longs-awaited perjury trial for home run champ barry bonds will start in san francisco. jury selection takes place first thing this morning. if that goes smoothly, opening statements will happen this afternoon. barry bonds is accused of lying to a grand jury about using

steroids. he's also facing one count of obstruction of justice. if he's convicted, barry bonds could possibly go to jail. a search continues right now for the three people who took san francisco police officers on a wild chase to san francisco's bayview district. ktvu's kraig debro joining us live with what led to that overnight chase and what happened to those officers that they ended up in the hospital. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this happened very close to candlestick park, less than a mile. the car actually crossed the driveway of hoss and jamestown and ended up in a bunch of plants, even knocked over a fence. you can see the dirt here and the cactus is crashed. over here it looks like this came from a headlight. also knocked down a fence here. this all started around 2:00 a.m. in the morning. there were two officers who spotted a sedan, a four-door.

they economicked the license -- americaed the license plate and found out the car was stolen. they started a pursuit. but it ended up at james town and hoss. the officers followed the car as it crashed into the fence there. the three men got out and ran. whenever the officers started that'sing -- claying these men on foot, that's when they got hurt. one of them had to be wheeled into the hospital. we're not sure of the extent of their injuries. we have to check on that later. we do know that neither of the men are in custody at this hour. we're still trying to find out the injuries that happened to the officers, how serious they are. 8:32. we now know the name of a pedestrian killed over the weekend in a hit-and-run crash in san francisco. 51-year-old david henderson was found in the road near market

and 8th street. he was pronounced dead at the scene. so far police have not  identified any suspects even the vehicle involved in this case. if you have any information call the san francisco police. san francisco police are still looking for the hit-and- run driver who smashed up seven vehicles in the castro this weekend. look at these pictures that a viewer sent us into the station showing the damage to a pickup truck in the 200 block of delores street the driver came up the demolition derby until crashing his own truck and then running off. no one was hurt. 7:33. a fremont cafe is requiring singers at the open-mic night to sing original material only. the cafe says it's taking that step to avoid to pay royalties. and patty's is caningle --

there's some excitement about big corporate dealmaking, specifically this deal -- at&t has reached an agreement to buy t-mobile usa from its german parent company for $39 billion. it's getting 4 more new

subscribers and -- 24 million more new subscribers and that would mean better service but it could also mean higher prices. the deal must be approved still by anti-trust regulators and that could take until the end of the year. at&t's stock is up in early trading. a new report shows existing home sales took a dive. february sales were down 9%. the median price fell to $156,000 and that's the lowest level for home prices in nine years. 7:45. some big changes in car seat safety for kids this morning. the american academy for pediatrics just changed its position about how children should ride in cars. samantha hayes is in washington, d.c. she has all of the details. >> reporter: good morning. this is all about kid safety in cars but i think for some parents, you know, this news may not be -- they may notwell

come it because at a -- welcome it. now the american academy of pediatrics says no, wait until they are 2. they think that's the safest thing to do, especially because at 12 months maybe your child that's -- they are saying there's no reason to change car seats or turn the seat around before that time. a couple of our headlines out of this report, the study also advises most children will need to ride in a belt-positioning booster seat until they are 4'9". and kids 13 and under need to ride in the backseat of the car. they shouldn't be in the front side passenger seat. they say this is the safest way to go, that stu did you i -- studies and research shows car accidents while fatalities for children have decreased significantly, it's still --

there's new information about more welding flaws in the gas pipeline near that part that brew knupp san bruno -- near that part that blew up in san bruno. pg&e uncovered the flaws during informations after the blast. they say they removed those parts of the pipeline and sent them to a virginia lab to be examined. hundreds of people who came out to help a 13-year-old peninsula boy, bryce vasberg, was -- was diagnosed with anemia, the kind that prevents the formation of red and white blood cells. yesterday, people lined you in burlingame to be screened for bone marrow donations. many say they don't know bryce but felt the need to help. >> i have four children and i

well. you and i have been reporting that our viewers are reporting -- are reporting showers. it will be dry and then have to use the windshield wipers. i just want to remind you. any time you use your windshield wipers day or night, you need to have those headlights on because it's california state law. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. we're just 30 minutes away from the start of the barry bonds perjury trial. allie rasmus is at the courthouse in san francisco. barry bonds just got there, right? >> reporter: we, that's right, dave. this trial is eight years in the making. barry bonds said he never knowingly took steroids. and now his perjury trial is set to begin in a few minutes. we got this video of barry bonds walking into the courthouse in san francisco. he pulled up in a black suv.

security, walked right into the federal courthouse and went through security checkpoints just like everybody else. now, barry bonds is in court today to watch the proceedings. he's not expected to testify. the trial is not about whether bonds took steroids. it's about whether he -- it's about whether he lied about it. he faces one count of lying under oath. one count of obstruction of justice. jury selection is the first thing that's going to happen today when this trial gets going about a half hour from now. there are about 50 perspective jurors who will be questioned in person by attorneys on both sides. jury experts say it can be tough to convince jurors that perjury sa serious offense. >> this is something that prosecutors routinely have to deal with in perjury trials, that illustrating for the jury that the subject of the lies may seem trivial but the lies to the justice system are anything but that and here's why. >> reporter: and perjury is

what barry bonds is accused of. this trial is supposed to take two to four weeks. federal prosecutors plan to call 50 witnesses. one witness who said he will not testify is greg anderson. he's barry bonds's childhood friend and trainer accused of giving his friend steroids. if he is called to testify and refuses again, possibly as early as tomorrow, he could be found in contempt of court again and go back to prison again. but before any of that happens, jury selection needs to begin. that is set to start in about a half and hour. and if they get through that phase, opening statements could begin this afternoon. back to you. >> thank you. it's three minutes after 8:00. new this morning, turkey has secured the release of four "new york times" reporters held by libya.

they were handed over to the turkic embassy. libya said they were going to release the four last friday. no reason for the delay. the journalists were captured in the eastern part of the country last week. "the new york times" says the four entered the country without visas as many western journalists have had to do. yusef bey iv's trial starts today. he's accused of hiring the gunman that killed chauncey bailey. bailey was writing an article exposing a lot of the bay area's now defunct your black muslim bakery. convicted gunman broussard is expected to testify in the trial as part of a plea deal. two san francisco police officers were rushed to the hospital overnight after being hurt during a foot chase. it happened at baldwin and oakdale near candlestick park. the two officers were chasing a stolen car when the three people inside the car jumped

out and started running. the officers ran after them but they somehow were hurt during that pursuit. the three suspects remain on the loose. yet another injured police officer, this time near brentwood. it happened about 5:00 yesterday afternoon on marsh creek road near dear valley road -- deer valley road. cleanup efforts are still underway after last week's tsunami surge caused $26 million of damage to the santa cruz harbor. jade hernandez is at the harbor now with how the city is preparing, should it happen again. jade? >> reporter: well, that's right. i just got off the phone with the harbor patrol officer. he told me that santa cruz authorities are trying to determine when to reopen this harbor. portions of it reopened over the weekend but weather shut it

down. the port director closed it through tomorrow. i want you to look at cell phone video. it's been more than a week since that day. as i mentioned, part of the santa cruz harbor reopened to boat traffic this weekend but stormy weather shot the harbor only hours after it reopened. half of the -- half of the dock and m-deck remain closed. hundreds of boats were cost, some lost their boats -- were damaged, some lost their boats. for now, the coast guard is overseeing the debris removal while locals worry about the start of salmon season on april 2nd. in meantime, authorities try to find ways to prepare for another disaster like this one. the tsunami ready program of santa cruz account will discuss the surge which caused this recent damage. santacruz county wants to prep

8:2. the 49ers could get $4.5 million tonight from the city of santa clara. the money would be used to help build a new football stadium in the city. right now it's part of redevelopments funds the city has committed to the tale. city leaders say giving the money to a private group like the 49ers will better protect the mine from the state as governor brown moves ever closer to his -- to his attempts. pg&e is scrambling to create an opt-out plan for the smart meters. the deadline's thursday. some customers worry about health risk off higher electricity bills. pg&e insists smart meters are safe and they -- are safe and say they will continue the

program. trant porttation officials say meshes are gaining more -- americans are gaining more weight. the proposal is to raise the assumed weight of city bus passengers from 150 pounds to 175. now, officials say the changes acknowledge the expanding girth of the average bus passenger -- passenger. if approved, fewer passengers would be allowed on buses. this all comes as gas prices keep going up and more people are using public transportation. the tensions in libya continue to drive up the price of crude oil. checking the latest numbers right now, a barrel of crude oil is over $10. that's translating -- $102. that's translating into higher gas prices at the pump. today, the average is $76 higher at 3.57 for a gallon of regular. bay area prices are much higher, with the average in san francisco, $4.02 in.

the bayview district with more on what happened overnight. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning. no new details from san francisco police, but this all happened a quarter mile from candlestick park. car they were facing was a camry and this ended up here. if you look closely in the mud here, you can see the tire tracks on ground ran over a cactus there, smashed into bushes. this looks to be part of a headlight that came off a car after the chase was other he. this all started at -- was over. this all started at 2:00 a.m. police spotted these men in the camry. i don't know what caused them to check the license plate. but they found out the car was stolen. it's unfair if that chase exceeded the speed limits. but it ened up at jamestown and haas. the car being driven by the three suspects ended up in that flower part in the garden there and it crashed into the fence. three suspects got out of the

taking a live look at the big board on on wall street. there is a concern over the nuclear plant, well, that's subsided. the dow is above 12,000. nasdaq is up almost 2%, up 50. s&p is up 19. the country's second largest wireless provider taking a big step to become number one. at&t is buying t-mobile's u.s. operations for $39 billion in cash and stock. the deal still needs approval from regulators. that could take until the end of the year. at&t is not saying how the merger will affect pricing. 8:45. there's a new study on car seat safety and children and it has the medical community making some new recommendations. our correspondent, samantha hayes, is in washington, d.c. with all of the details.

down on the day of his death. a waferning after the united nations and coalition forces. back here at home, hayward, the city of hayward, is et going -- is getting ready to take another step towards a major crackdown on street gangs. this week, the hayward city council will take a look at a police report that highlights the potential impact of a gang injunction. that would identify individual gang members and ban them from associating from another. it they violate it, they could be straight to jail. they are hoping to have the injunction in place by next year. also, the dmv is sending out 90-day extensionses for people who have -- extensions for people who have been waiting a long time for people

who are getting the new driver's licenses. tens of thousands of drivers have experienced very long delay. officials say the backlog is starting to dwindle. they say the contractor producing the licenses apologized for all of the delays. the "sacramento bee" says the contractor has had problems with the printers, with the lambenating machines as well as employees making mistakes that have to be corrected. gay vockets are putting pressure on apple to -- advocates are putting pressure on apple to remove an app. the group changeaught org said the exodus message is hateful and bigoted. it's posted a position on its website for the app's removal. 87,000 signatures have already been gathered. we told you the barry bonds's trial is now underway.

been dismissed. >> reporter: well, that's right. the trial is -- trial is underway and so is the jury selection process of we just got word about -- process. we just got word about ten minutes ago about 39 of the prospective jurors have been dismissed. one has been dismissed due to a death in the family and attorneys are questioning others right now we have a crew inside listening to the questions that both sides are asking to filter through the process. we've told some of the jurors have been dismissed because of ethical and political views. others have been dismissed because they feel that the perspective jurors have heard too much about this case. and-- and their opinions would be bias. we also saw barry bonds pull up to the federal wild -- billing he pulled up in a black suv. he had security detail and walked into the federal building and went through the security checkpoint just like
